Joey Scarborough Victorious On DIRTcar Sportsman Series Night During Malta Massive Weekend Winning 35-Lap Main Event and Claims CDRA Racing Title

MALTA, NY (Written By Mike Warren | CDRA Edits By Rob Hazer) – Joey Scarborough kicked off the 2026 season at Albany-Saratoga Speedway with a victory. And on Friday night, he did it again after 35 laps.

CDRA Edit: Both Scarborough wins were CDRA point paying events. Starting with the Spring Shootout back on April 17th and the season finale on September 25th at the great race place.

The Brandon, VT driver passed Canaan, CT racer Chris Crane Jr. on a Lap 22 restart and held on to score his second career DIRTcar Sportsman Series win, finishing the track’s season where he started it.

Chris Crane Jr. led the field to the green, outdueling Scarborough into Turn 1. The Canaan, CT driver got away from the No. 11VT, and Series regular Derrick McGrew Jr. before the race’s first caution came out on Lap 7 for Trevor Houghton.

Crane got the better of Scarborough on that restart, and again three laps later when Chad Gregory brought out the caution. However, when Dave Hackett slowed on Lap 22, it gave Scarborough another chance—one he didn’t waste.

When the race resumed, Scarborough gained momentum down the frontstretch before storming around the outside of the No. 711 for the lead in the middle of Turns 1 and 2. That was all Scarborough needed to earn his first Malta Massive Weekend victory, collecting $1,500 in the process.

Knowing the restart on Lap 22 could be the last one, Scarborough said it was his only shot.

“The restarts before me, he got a jump on those,” Scarborough said. “When the last caution came out, I said this has got to be it. I was on it. Didn’t let him get ahead, stuck with it and drove the wheels off the thing.”

CDRA Edit: The Malta Massive Weekend win for Scarborough was also his second career CDRA racing victory, which won him the series title by 1 point over Canaan, CT racer Chris Crane Jr.

Crane settled for second, earning his third straight Malta Massive Weekend podium, while McGrew crossed the line third with his second consecutive Series podium.

CDRA Edit: It’s also true that for the third consecutive CDRA season, a Crane has finished on the podium during Malta Massive Weekend and the Great Crate Classic.

McGrew, from Ballston Spa, NY, said things are clicking with Super DIRT Week coming up.

“We just have something figured out,” McGrew said.

“The driver and car are both going well together. Everywhere we go, we’ve been fast out of the gate. Another good point night even though we’re not standing in Victory Lane. We’ll settle for a third-place finish. Every guy ahead of us in points we needed to beat, we beat. Moving forward into (Super) DIRT Week, I hope we can do the same thing.”

Series points leader Tristan Ladouceur finished fourth, extending his Series lead to 86 points over Richard Murtaugh, who finished 11th.

Connor Crane rounded out the top five.

CDRA Edit: “It was a wild championship night for us, and to do it along side DIRTcar at Malta was special. There was a ton of talent here, but our CDRA racers rose to the occasion and raced it out for the title up front. Congrats to Joey and his team on a special kind of season. He will now receive the first L.D. Bossman Championship Trophy named in honor of Lyle DeVore,” said CDRA competition director Rob Hazer.

CDRA NOTES: Three notes to take away from the Great Crate Classic being with 6th place finisher Craig Wholey. The Bolton Landing, NY competitor maintained full-time status with CDRA in 2026 with his only DNS coming during the Rumble On The Ridge PPE. He finished 7th in point standings.

DIRTcar Sportsman standout Nigel Pendykoski of Niagara Falls, ON had a solid evening mixing it up with the CDRA stars and cars. Nigel raced from his 11th starting position to finish 7th.

Typically CDRA looks inside the top 10 for the Big Red One Herrington Farms Hard Charger race recognition, but for the first time in series history there’s an exception to the parameters. Middlegrove, NY racer Taylor Wason drove it like he stole it from 30th to 12th earning the nod.

CDRA TITLE WATCH: Brandon, VT racer Joey Scarborough did what he came to do. Earlier this season he said he wanted to win the CDRA title. He led the points, dropped the point lead to Chris Crane Jr., but showed up in a big way winning Malta Massive Weekend and the CDRA title by 1 point.

Canaan, CT racer Chris Crane Jr. was in position to claim it all. He led the first 22 laps of the Great Crate Classic Friday night but fell one spot and one point short to fellow competitor Joey Scarborough. Heartbreaking, but motivating to run it back and go for the title in 2027.

Ballston Spa, NY racer Derrick McGrew Jr. and Canaan, CT racer Connor Crane ended the season tied at 788 points. Via the tiebreaker parameters McGrew would get the third spot over Crane by virtue of having one more podium finish on the season. Great racing by both contenders.


UP NEXT FOR CDRA: With the CDRA point season over, doesn’t necessarily mean the action stops for the series racers. Many will be making the trip to Oswego, NY for Super Dirt Week October 5-10. We’ll be covering our series regulars as they attempt to win the Great Lakes 75 championship.

Former NOTY Winner Nick Brundige Has An Opportunity To Win It All During Malta Massive Weekend At Albany-Saratoga Speedway In The Great Crate Classic

ROUND LAKE, NY – 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼? Nick Brundige has once again earned a spot in the title conversation with a chance to win the JAM Performance & Consulting CDRA series points title presented by Elmo’s Speed Supply and the L.D. Bossman Championship Trophy.

Since joining CDRA as a full-time regular, the Round Lake, NY racer has been making his mark in the Capital District and beyond. Once again, Brundige is looking to finish top five in season ending point standings and has a wild shot at winning the whole damn thing, but would need one amazing night.

Nick has the hardest path to the title, but it is possible. He’s currently 24 points out of first place, but with the opportunity to make up 31 he can earn a ticket to title town. First and foremost, like Al Davis said long ago, “just win baby.”

Even with a win, he needs a lot of help from the racing gods. Nobody wants to see any title contenders have a bad night, but anything can happen in dirt track racing. If Brundige wins he needs his peers contending for the CDRA L.D. Bossman Championship Trophy to finish deep in the field.

With a win he would need Taylor Wason to finish 7th or worse, Derrick McGew Jr. to finish 17th or worse, Connor Cane to finish 19th or worse, Joey Scarborough to finish 22nd or worse, and Chris Crane Jr. to finish 24th or worse. If he finishes 2nd or 3rd, it’s a solid run, but his chances weaken.

Remember, CDRA does not crown co-champions. In the event of any ties in point standings for any position, we go to the tiebreakers set forth in series rules. First, podium finishes. That’s top 3’s (1st, 2nd, 3rd) not just wins. If still tied, the tiebreaker falls back on the better finisher in the final PPE.

“Nick has really been doing well on tour with us. Each season he’s been a full-time regular he’s put himself in position to finish top five in points. Here we are again and he has a shot to do that, plus a shot at the title. It’s a long shot, but it’s a shot. I’m sure just having a solid run, being in contention, and finishing well means a lot to Nick and his dad,” said CDRA competition director Rob Hazer.

Former CDRA Champion Taylor Wason Again In Contention For Trip To Title Town With Upcoming PEE During Malta Massive Weekend At Albany-Saratoga Speedway

MIDDLEGROVE, NY – 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼? For the third consecutive season former CDRA champion Taylor Wason is in the title conversation with a chance to win the JAM Performance & Consulting CDRA series points title presented by Elmo’s Speed Supply and the L.D. Bossman Championship Trophy.

The ‘Middlegrove missile’ earned the inaugural CDRA championship through consistency without a trip to victory lane. He shut the naysayers up by defending his title valiantly the following season and claiming his first series win and finishing runner up. Now, he’s at it again with a shot to win it all.

Middlegrove, NY racer Taylor Wason is 17 points out of the top spot. Obviously, as is the story with all contenders, winning would be his best chance at overcoming the deficit. However, his path to another championship is a little more complex than the four racers ahead of him in standings.

Let’s say he wins Malta Massive Weekend for Sportsman Modifieds in the PPE we’ve titled Great Crate Classic, which also doubles as a DIRTcar Sportsman Championship series event, he would need point leader Chris Crane Jr. to finish 17th or worse to win his second championship.

Remember, CDRA does not crown co-champions. In the event of any ties in point standings for any position, we go to the tiebreakers set forth in series rules. First, podium finishes. That’s top 3’s (1st, 2nd, 3rd) not just wins. If still tied, the tiebreaker falls back on the better finisher in the final PPE.

If by chance Wason and Crane end up tied in points, it would favor Crane. Here’s where it gets complex. Even if Wason won, he’d also need Joey Scarborough to finish 15th or worse, Connor Crane to finish 12th or worse, and Derrick McGrew Jr. to finish 10th or worse. But it’s possible.

“The hardest part for me as a promoter is to explain that all these guys have a mathematical chance, without sounding as if anyone wants any of these extraordinary racers to have a bad night. They’ve all raced hard, followed the series, and quite frankly deserve to earn this championship. Any of them would be a solid representative as our champion,” said CDRA competition director Rob Hazer.

There’s only one more title contender to talk about and he’s been in the hunt for a Bossman two straight seasons. Tomorrow, we talk Nick Brundige. He has the hardest path to title town, but every bit the opportunity to claim the 2026 L.D. Bossman Championship Trophy.

Derrick McGrew Jr. Has Opportunity To Win CDRA Title and Claim The L.D. Bossman Championship Trophy After Malta Massive Weekend At Albany-Saratoga Speedway

BALLSTON SPA, NY – 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼? Derrick McGrew Jr. has had a solid racing season in 2026, and now with one PPE left he has an opportunity to win the JAM Performance & Consulting CDRA series points title presented by Elmo’s Speed Supply and the L.D. Bossman Championship Trophy.

Ballston Spa, NY hot shoe DM2 trails the point leader Chris Crane Jr. by a mere 7 points. He’s been making noise weekly at the great race place, on the DIRTcar Sportsman tour, and right here in the Capital District chasing the CDRA crown. Malta Massive Weekend is his chance to derail the crane train.

His most sure path to victory is winning the Great Crate Classis at Albany-Saratoga Speedway on Friday September 25th against what is sure to be a stacked field of talent considering it’s also a DIRTcar Sportsman Series championship event. That might be easier said than done, as the Crane brothers have dominated Malta’s big season ending event two years in a row.

Should McGrew Jr. overcome odds and win that’s part of the equation, and he’ll need Chris Crane Jr to finish 7th or worse to win the title by one point. If McGrew wins and Crane Jr. is 6th, they tie and we go to the tiebreakers.

If the second-generation chip off the old block manages to finish 2nd or any other position, he’d need Chris Crane Jr., Joey Scarborough, and Connor Crane behind him by no less than 3 spots to take 3rd in points, 5 spots to take 2nd in points, and 7 spots to take the point lead.

“I’ve been really impressed with Derrick McGrew Jr.’s growth as a racer and a young man over the years. He’s got good teachers being surrounded by and mentored by his father and uncle Randy who have both been successful, but it’s his calm demeanor and patient racing style that has really come a long way. He’d be just as solid of a champion as Chris, Connor or Joey,” said CDRA competition director Rob Hazer.

Connor Crane Has Opportunity To Become Second Driver In CDRA History To Earn Track and Series Title During Same Racing Season By Overcoming Five-Point Deficit At Malta Massive Weekend

CANAAN, CT – 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼? Connor Crane has an opportunity to do what only one other racer has done if he can win the JAM Performance & Consulting CDRA series points title presented by Elmo’s Speed Supply and the L.D. Bossman Championship Trophy named in honor of Lyle DeVore.

Canaan, CT racer Connor Crane trails his big brother Chris Crane Jr. by a mere 5-points for the top spot in CDRA racing standings. Connor, aka ‘kid cushion’, is fresh off winning the Albany-Saratoga track championship and now heads back to his Friday stomping grounds for the CDRA finale.

For Connor to match Tim Hartaman Jr. as the only driver to win a track title and the CDRA title in the same season, he needs a few things to happen starting with the obvious, winning. He’s won before at Malta Massive Weekend and was honored for it with the series Outstanding Performance award.

If Crane finishes second, he’d need big brother Chris to finish fourth or worse to overcome those 5-points, but he’s also going to need Joey Scarborough behind him finishing sixth or worse. This is the first driver of our six contenders who has to overcome two of his fellow competitors in points.

If Connor were to finish anywhere else in the field, which will be full of talent from both CDRA and DIRTcar competitors for the Great Crate Classic on Friday September 25th at Albany-Saratoga, he would need both Chris Crane Jr. and Joey Scarborough behind him by at least six spots.

“It’s bittersweet for the Crane family. One kid is going to win, and one is not. It happened with the track title at Malta, which was a tough pill to swallow for Chris. He’s worked so hard and done so well, but racing happened and cut him short to his brother for the title. That may happen with us too. I’d rather see a clean and green race so these guys can settle it like racers, but unpredictability with a tight margin will make the night tense no doubt,” said CDRA competition director Rob Hazer.

Next driver we’ll look at of the six title contenders is Derrick McGrew Jr. who has been red hot this summer with wins all around the Capital District. Derrick will need to overcome a 7-point deficit to claim the 2026 L.D. Bossman Championship Trophy and CDRA points title.
