Connor Crane Wins Thriller In DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Great Crate Classic Malta Massive Weekend Event While Tim Hartman Jr Earns CDRA Series Title

(Written By Mike Warren | Additional Information By #Rob Hazer) MALTA, NY – One year after finishing second to his brother during Malta Massive Weekend, Connor Crane was one spot better on Friday night at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. The Canaan, CT driver outdueled Richard Murtaugh in the closing laps to score his first career DIRTcar Sportsman Series victory.

(#: Winning the Great Crate Race was also Connor Crane’s first career CDRA points paying win.)

Track regular Dylan Madsen led the field to the green in the 35-lap Feature, driving away from Crane in the race’s opening laps. The Spencertown, NY driver held the advantage throughout the first half of the race, as Crane held off early challenges from Murtaugh for second.

That battle lasted until Lap 13, when Murtaugh’s momentum on the outside lane was too much for Crane, as he powered his No. 33 past Crane for second. That happened as Madsen started catching lap traffic, allowing Murtaugh and Crane to catch Madsen out front.

Murtaugh’s first opportunity to take the lead came on Lap 19, when he nosed ahead of Madsen’s No. 89 on the backstretch. Madsen countered immediately, though, sliding in front of Murtaugh to keep the lead as they exited Turn 4. However, Madsen’s lead was short-lived, as Murtaugh kept his momentum rolling on the top, driving by Madsen on the outside lane to take the lead on Lap 22.

Behind Murtaugh, Crane followed on the inside, taking second away from Madsen. As Murtaugh pulled away, a yellow on Lap 28 for Savannah Laflair slowed the field for the second time, giving Crane another shot at the win.

When the race resumed, Murtaugh continued his pace on the outside, but Crane stayed with the DIRTcar Sportsman Series full-time competitor as they battled for the lead. Crane took his first chance to pass Murtaugh on Lap 30, sliding in front of him in Turn 4. But it wasn’t enough that time, as Murtaugh drove by him again on the bottom.

Crane wouldn’t be stopped, though. As the two drivers exited Turn 4 on Lap 31, Crane threw another slide job at Murtaugh to take the lead as they crossed the start/finish line. Murtaugh returned the favor in Turns 1 and 2, sliding Crane as they drove through the corner, but Crane’s momentum was too much as he pulled ahead of Murtaugh again.

That was all Crane needed as he led the final two laps to win the 35-lap Feature.

(#: Murtaugh crossed the line second, with Emmett Waldron, Gavin Eisele, and Chris Crane Jr. rounding out the top five.)

“I just have to thank Richard for running me clean,” Crane said. “That was awesome. I can’t believe I’m here after last year, when my brother passed me with like 10 to go. I can’t believe I did it.

“This track is awesome. This is the best place to be in the Northeast,” he concluded.

Murtaugh settled for second in only his third appearance at the track. He said even with the lead, his lack of experience played a role in relinquishing the lead at the end of the race.

“I knew he was better on the bottom,” Murtaugh said. “When I went into Turn 1, I looked over and saw him. It’s my third time ever here, so I didn’t really know what to do. I was just kind of ripping the top. Once he got under me, I didn’t think he’d slide me, and once he did, I was like, what do I do now?”

Emmett Waldron crossed the line third, earning back-to-back Series top fives. The Savannah, NY driver said that while he had a good car, he still needed to start up front.

“This car is really good,” Waldron said. “We just need to start more toward the front more. We finally made a redraw in one of these Series races. We’ve been starting 11th and 12th, and it’s so hard to get to the front in these crate cars.”

(#: DIRTcar) Series points leader Shane Pecore finished ninth, extending his lead to nine points over Tristan Ladouceur, who finished 11th.

CDRA NOTES: With his win at Malta Massive Weekend in the Great Crate Race, Canaan, CT racer Connor Crane jumped up to 6th in final point standings. Despite his points earned, he will be eligible for Newcomer Of The Year again in 2026 per rule. NOTY award winner Nick Brundige of Round Lake, NY was able to utilize home track advantage to take third in points away from young gun Tavien Blowers from Caroga Lake, NY. Final note, Derrick McGrew Jr. broke the three-way tie between himself, Alex Palmer-Sawyer, and Michal Wagner-Fitzgerald by qualifying for the main event and finishing 8th overall in final point standings.

CDRA TITLE WATCH: Tough break for defending champion Taylor Wason from Middlegrove, NY as mechanical failure sidelined him about midway through the race. Glenville, NY hot shoe Tim Hartman Jr. raced from 20th to 10th to secure his first CDRA championship and earned the Big Red One Hard Charger race award in honor of Jason Herrington.

UP NEXT FOR CDRA: Next up for CDRA are the annual Honors awards, which will be released December 19th just one week before Christmas. They include honoring the Champion Tim Hartman Jr., Newcomer Of The Year (NOTY) Nick Brundige, the Driver Of The Year (DOTY), Outstanding Performance Of The Year (OPTY), Fan Favorite Of The Year (FOTY), Honorable Mentions Of The Year (HOTY), and the top 10 drivers in final point standings.

Tim Hartman Jr Earns Big Red One Hard Charger On His Way To Mr. Crate Track USA Victory At Lebanon Valley

WEST LEBANON, NY – Mr. Crate Track USA returned to Lebanon Valley Speedway Thursday night and Tim Hartman Jr. stomped the yard for an impressive 20-lap feature victory and extending his CDRA racing series lead with one point paying race left on the 2025 schedule.

Middleburgh, NY racer Connor Prokop and East Greenbush, NY true valley rookie sensation AJ Albreada would lead the field to the green flag where the top spot would be hotly contested early and often. Defending series champion Taylor Wason of Middlegrove, NY took a big swing at the top spot going 3-wide with with the 22a and 12p cars.

Albreada driving his Rob Albreada Snap-On Tools number 22a, pulled a crossover on Wason’s Lenihan Paving 07w machine and assumed the lead. The aforementioned Midtel Solutions 12p of Prokop was left to battle with East Nassau, NY racer Owen Lewis and hard charging series point leader Tim Hartman Jr. who was coming fast with his MRP Companies number 22 Troyer.

After a spirited duel between Albreada, Wason, and Hartman it was TH2 emerging in the top spot by the halfway point in the race. Albreada was secure in second, while Wason found himself in a battle with Prokop, Brookfield, CT racer Nick Giardini, and Raymertown, NY racer Dylan Grogan for top five positions.

Otis, MA racer Ray Hall Jr. was on the move from his 13th starting position with his Gary J. O’Brien Property Services 57. Hall was one of three drivers to improve six positions while earning a top 10 finish, with the other two being Tim Hartman Jr. and Nick Giardini. Hartman would be awarded the Big Red One Hard Charger by virtue of his win.

For Hartman it was another trip to victory lane, as he picked up the Mr. Crate Track USA win. It was his 4th CDRA racing series win, which is more than any other competitor in two seasons of Capital District Racing Association competition.

Rounding out the top five were AJ Albreada, Connor Prokop, Nick Giardini, and Taylor Wason. Albreada was awarded Newcomer Of The Race for his second-place finish.

NOTES: At Mr. Crate Track USA, it’s important to note the efforts by Caroga Lake, NY racer Tavien Blowers. The CDRA regular earned a 10th place finish respectively after starting 15th and moved into third in series standings. Round Lake, NY racer Nick Brundige was also on hand at Lebanon Valley Speedway, as he’s been a welcomed addition to the regulars this season. Brundige earned a 15th place finish respectively and moved into fourth in series standings just 9 points behind Blowers.

TITLE WATCH: Tim Hartman Jr. is one race away from securing the Season Two (2025) JAM Performance & Consulting CDRA racing series presented by Elmo’s Speed Supply title. After his Mr. Crate Track USA win, TH2 extended his point lead to 28 over defending series champion Taylor Wason. Speaking of Wason, he has without question silenced his critics. Still mathematically in the hunt for the championship, Taylor earned a tour win and has gone Hoosier-to-Hoosier with red hot Hartman for the series crown. No matter how it shakes out at Albany-Saratoga for Malta Massive Weekend, Wason has been a worthy champion.

UP NEXT FOR CDRA: The series heads back to Albany-Saratoga Speedway on Friday September 19th for the Great Crate Classic at Malta Massive Weekend. It’s also part of the DIRTcar Sportsman Fall Championship series meaning the competition will be fierce.

Defending CDRA Champion Taylor Wason Wins Montgomery County Brawl At Glen Ridge Motorsports Park

08/10/25: Taylor Wason in Scott Duell Marketing & Designs Victory Lane after winning the Montgomery County Brawl at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park Sunday. (Jeremy McGaffin Photo | CDRA 2025)

FULTONVILLE, NY – Last season Middlegrove, NY racer Taylor Wason punched his ticket to title town without a trip to victory lane. This season he once again finds himself in championship contention, but finally parked it in Scott Duell Marketing & Designs victory lane for his first career CDRA Sportsman Modified victory.

All signs pointed to a dominating night for Glenville, NY hot shoe Tim Hartman Jr. He turned the J-Tees Screen Printing fast time in hot laps and won the JAM Performance & Consulting heat race presented by Elmo’s Speed Supply, which put him on the pole for the 30-lap Montgomery County Brawl main event.

First turn, first lap, yellow-yellow-yellow. Hartman appeared to be on the wrong end of inadvertent contact that left the Kick Fly’s Quality Hemp Products, Bemiss Trucking, & Midtel Solutions number 22 facing the wrong direction. TH2 would regroup and tag on at the back of the field to begin his charge forward.

Up front it was all Taylor Wason. He wheeled his Lenihan Paving, Lake Auto Parts, & HICO Fabrication number 07w masterfully on a slick quarter mile bullring. The defending series champion led all 30 laps en route to his first CDRA points paying victory.

Leading the entire race wasn’t an easy task for Wason, as multi-time track champion and CDRA regular Zach Buff was runner up with his West End Towing & Repair, DIG Race Products, and Buff’s Auto Service number 01. Buff would try as he might, but found himself with a challenger late in the event.

The above-mentioned Tim Hartman Jr. was blazing a path through the field. By lap 24 Hartman had applied enough pressure to slip under Buff and take command of the runner up spot relegating Buff back to third.

Nick Brundige was quietly making his way in the 30-lap feature event. The Round Lake, NY racer is in the thick of the championship point battle and leads the Newcomer Of The Year standings with his Capital District Towing, Halfmoon Evergreen Property Maintenance, and Miller Motorsports number 916. Brundige would finish fourth by races end.

Rounding out the top five was Capital District young gun Tavien Blowers. The Caroga Lake, NY racer started the Brawl in a jingle with Hartman’s 22 and Tanner Warner’s number 78. Blowers rebounded to earn a respective finish, as he too is in the championship point battle.

NOTES: While it was a mellow Montgomery County Brawl at Glen Ridge on Sunday August 10th, there are plenty of storylines to go around. Taylor Wason picked up his first CDRA points paying win and chipped away at Tim Hartman Jr’s point lead. Hartman Jr. rallied from a lap one incident to finish runner up heading to Lebanon Valley, a place he has dominated for the past three seasons. Nick Brundige has quietly made some noise, positioning himself top five in points and leads all drivers eligible for Newcomer Of The Year.

TITLE WATCH: Tim Hartman Jr. holds a 22-point lead over Talor Wason after 4 of 6 scheduled points paying events. The top two point earning drivers in Season Two (2025) now have victories to their credit this season. When they unload at Lebanon Valley Speedway Thursday August 28th for Mr. Crate Track USA, Wason will be trying to keep pace with Hartman at a track he currently has a five-race win streak at. Zach Buff isn’t mathematically out of the title hunt, but he’s got ground to make up.

UP NEXT FOR CDRA: The series heads to West Lebanon, NY for a big show at Lebanon Valley Speedway on Thursday August 28th. CDRA will be part of the Mr. Dirt Track Super DIRTcar Big Block Modified Series event with the highly anticipated return of Mr. Crate Track USA.

CDRA is a nostalgic throwback to the CVRA days. A series designed specifically for Capital District racing. Season two schedule consists of a diverse schedule at storied dirt tracks like the great race place, the fastest quarter mile on dirt, and the valley of speed. Drivers who do travel the Capitaland will earn hardware and some green for their efforts.

Gavin Eisele Wins CDRA Points Paying Thriller Over Tavien Blowers In An Instant Classic At Glen Ridge Motorsports Park

08/03/25: CDRA / DIRTcar Rumble At The Ridge winner Gavin Eisele (18) races with Camdin Cook (14) for qualifying position Sunday at Glen Ridge. (Bill McGaffin Photo | CDRA 2025)

FULTONVILLE, NY – Rumble At The Ridge didn’t disappoint, as an instant classic broke out between Gavin Eisele and Tavien Blowers in the 40-lap CDRA points paying race that also began the DIRTcar Sportsman Championship series. Eisele went on to claim the victory with Blowers the runner up.

If luck picked a driver to partner with Sunday night at the fastest quarter mile on dirt, Gavin Eisele was the guy. Per his own admission he wasn’t good to start the night. After his heat another driver was DQ’d for a spoiler, which moved Eisele to a redraw spot. The very last redraw spot, and without even picking a chip he was generously left the pole position to defend his race win from a year ago.

Lafargeville, NY racer Gavin Eisele with his Performance Automotive number 18e was joined by Alexandria, ON racer Tristian Ladouceur driving his Thompson Motorsports 92t and the pair led the 27-car field to the green, with Eisele taking the early race lead.

Behind Eisele, DIRTcar’s best were indeed rumbling, with Capital District hot shoes for position early in the feature event. Kingston, ON racer Jessica Power driving her Greenshield Pest Control 52 found herself battling with DIRTcar East Region champion and Capitaland top gun Zach Buff with his West End Towing & Repair 01.

Buff’s early race promise went sour fast, as he was the reason for the 40-lap event’s only caution after something went amiss causing him to slow and stop on lap seven. That would tighten the field up for a restart that would change the game.

On the restart the aforementioned Power was left to fend off the hard charging Caroga Lake, NY young gun Tavien Blowers with his O’Connor Trucking 43. He wasn’t alone as another Capital District talented racer Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald from Gansevoort, NY with his S&S Mobile RV Repair 88 was mixing it up with DIRTcar regular Tyler Corcoran of Central Square, NY.

By the midpoint of the event Eisele had reached lap traffic, which would play a factor in the outcome of the race. Blowers was hounding Ladouceur in traffic, until making his move to take second from him on lap 25. That set up a battle for the lead with Blowers tracking Eisele through traffic.

On lap 33, there was almost a Cinderella story. Tavien Blowers, who had been following Gavin Eisele through traffic, saw an opening and took the lead. He’d lead exactly three laps until Eisele took the lead back and claimed victory. Solid run for second by Blowers and Ladouceur would finish third.

Behind the lead trio, Capital District top wheelman Tim Hartman Jr. out of Glenville, NY worked his way from 10th to finish fourth when the checkered dropped with his Kick Fly’s Quality Hemp Products number 22. He was followed by Jessica Power who finished fifth, her best career effort at Glen Ridge to date.

Rounding out the top ten finishers were Central Square, NY racer Tyler Corcoran, Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald of Gansevoort, NY, Taylor Wason of Middlegrove, NY, Cornwall, ON racer Shane Pecore, and Fulton, NY racer Richard Murtaugh III.

“It’s pretty cool to get this car out and go to victory lane the first race with it,” Eisele said in victory lane. He continued saying, “I felt good. It’s just tough with the lap cars. Tavien passed me on the bottom, and then I knew where I needed to be. Once I got back by him, I knew I wasn’t leaving the bottom.”

CDRA series regular Tavien Blowers was excited about his performance in the runner up spot saying, “I don’t know if we could’ve been much better. Gavin is a little better at navigating traffic. We don’t normally run with a lot of lap cars. But this is the most fun I’ve had in a racecar.”

DIRTcar series regular Tristian Ladouceur rounded out the podium and said, “We had a really great car tonight. I just made a couple mistakes in lap traffic.”

NOTES: With his exciting second place finish in the CDRA Rumble At The Ridge, Tavien Blowers now has a pair of runner up finishes to his credit in points paying races. Last season he was 10th in overall standings and this year he’s on track to improve on that substantially. ‘Mikey Waggs’ aka Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald finished solidly in 7th in the Rumble. Waggs has established himself as a title contender in Season Two. Finally, Derrick McGrew Jr. finished 12th Sunday at The Ridge, but it’s his 3rd place standing in current CDRA points that will turn a few heads.

TITLE WATCH: Tim Hartman Jr. has emerged as the clear-cut point leader after Chris Jakubiak surrendered the top spot by missing the Ridge Rumble. Hartman will hold a 25-point lead heading back to Glen Ridge Sunday August 10th for another points paying series race. Defending CDRA champion Taylor Wason is back in the title conversation after another top ten finish. He took the checkered flag 8th in Rumble At The Ridge, which has officially moved him to second in points. Derrick McGrew Jr., Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald, Zach Buff, and Tavien Blowers are all within striking distance of the top spot with three points paying races left in CDRA Season Two.

UP NEXT FOR CDRA: The series returns to Glen Ridge Motorsports Park Sunday August 10th for the Montgomery County Brawl, which was originally scheduled for June 1st. It marks the second of back-to-back points paying races at the fastest quarter mile on dirt.

Tim Hartman Jr. Parks It In Victory Lane Winning The Flying Trowel 32 CDRA Points Paying Event At Albany-Saratoga Speedway

07/25/25: Tim Hartman Jr. (22) races with Alex Palmer-Sawyer for podium finishing positions during the Flying Trowel 32 CDRA points paying race at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. (Bill McGaffin Photo | CDRA 2025)

MALTA, NY – It took ‘Big Time Little Tim’ 22-laps and a late race restart to hunt down leader Drew Cormie, toss the kitchen sink at him, and take the win in Friday night’s Flying Trowel 32 Sportsman Modified feature. It was part of a special night for the DeVore family honoring Stan Da’ Man and it was also Tim Hartman Jr’s third career CDRA points paying victory.

Argyle, NY racer Drew Cormie and Clifton Park, NY racer Nick Lussier led the 29-car starting field to the green flag, with Cormie taking a commanding lead with his Versatile Glass & Service number 667. That left Lussier to fend for second battling early with a hard charging Jon Miller in his Lazzaro’s Auto Body number 12.

Speaking of charging hard, Tim Hartman Jr. started 8th with his Parillo owned Kick Fly’s Quality Hemp products Cyclone chassis number 22 and wasted little time passing two cars consisting of Jeff Washburn’s R. Bowles Heating & Plumbing 18 car and David Baronowski driving Peckham Motorsports number 112.

Yellow flag waived on lap 2 when the Stone’s Pharmacy 27 of Michael Ballestero of Saratoga Springs, NY suffered a flat right rear tire. That would tighten the field back up for a restart where Cambridge, NY racer Alex Palmer-Sawyer started his career best night by moving his Nadeau’s Concrete 61 car past Next Generation Roofing racer Chad Gregory for 4th position.

A wild 4-wide battle broke out with racers Connor Crane of Canaan, CT, Craig Wholey of Bolton Landing, NY, point leader Chris Jakubiak of Ballston Spa, NY and Elliott Lussier of Halfmoon, NY. That battle was cut short by the yellow flag waving once again, this time for Next Generation Roofing racer Derrick McGrew Jr. who was facing the wrong direction on top of turn two.

Before the green could fly, the aforementioned Jon Miller had a heartbreaking end to his 2nd place run when his left rear wheel fell off on the back stretch. When the green did fly Hartman began his charge to the front chasing down Cormie who led from the start. Behind them current CDRA point leader Jakubiak was battling with defending series champion Taylor Wason of Middlegrove, NY.

Hartman battled with Palmer-Sawyer for a handful of laps, used a lap 22 caution to his advantage, and never looked back earning his second Stan Da’ Man night victory winning the Flying Trowel 32. Cormie had crossed the line 2nd, but was light at the scales. That moved Palmer-Sawyer to 2nd, Jakubiak to 3rd, with Baronowski 4th, and Amsterdam, NY racer Zach Buff making his way to 5th.

“It’s good to win some extra money. Thanks to the track for putting on an event like this,” Hartman said in victory lane. He continued saying, “Track was great, car was great. Drew ran a great race and was hard to catch. We’re lucky we had that restart late so I could throw the kitchen sink at him and get in front of him.”

Rounding out the top ten finishers were Canaan, CT racer Chris Crane Jr., Bennington, VT racer Joey Scarborough, Spencertown, NY racer Dylan Madsen, Canaan, CT racer Connor Crane, and defending series champion Taylor Wason from Middlegrove, NY.

NOTES: Let’s start the notes off by mentioning Alex Palmer-Sawyer, who had his best career performance when the lights shined brightest. It was Stan Da’ Man night, extra distance, extra money on the line, and a CDRA series race and APS earned a 2nd place finish. Also worth noting is David Baronowski in the Peckham Motorsports 112 car who had an impressive 4th place finish under the Friday night lights at Malta. Final note, Zach Buff of Amsterdam, NY and his 5th place finish in the West End Towing & Repair 01 car. Buff started 17th and raced his way to a top five.

TITLE WATCH: It’s getting dicey for a ticket to title town. Chris Jakubiak kept his CQC Painting 49 in the point lead with another podium finish during CDRA competition, but he only holds a ONE POINT margin over Tim Hartman Jr. It’s no surprise Hartman is a title contender, as he has wins at all three tracks CDRA has point paying races at. Scarborough, Madsen, and Crane all within a mere 13 points of leader Jakubiak. Finally in our title watch, defending champion Taylor Wason is grinding and working his way back towards the top. With his respective 10th place finish in the Flying Trowel 32, he’s now 8th in point standings just 22 out of the lead.

UP NEXT FOR CDRA: Focus shifts to Glen Ridge Motorsports Park for a DIRTcar Sportsman Series event that doubles as a points paying race for CDRA competitors on Sunday August 3rd for a Rumble At The Ridge.

Chris Jakubiak Earns Career Highlight Win Over Stout 55 Car Field In CDRA Points Opener At Albany-Saratoga Speedway Sportsman Modified Spring Shootout

04/19/25: Chris Jakubiak earned his first CDRA points paying win at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. (Rocky Photography / RPW 2025)

MALTA, NY – Albany-Saratoga Speedway hosted the 2025 JAM Performance CDRA Racing Series points championship opener presented by Elmo’s Speed Supply, as part of their Super DIRTcar Series 60th Season kickoff program where Ballston Spa, NY racer Chris Jakubiak was victorious taking home the Cordova Plumbing and Heating winners loot and the series point lead.

55 of the Capital Districts most talented Sportsman Modified racers met up at the Malta, NY great race place to slap clay and claim victory. After Tyler Rapp, Chris Jakubiak, Joey Scarborough, Jon Miller, and Bryce Breault won qualifying heats and Taylor Wason with Zach Buff won last chance qualifiers the field was set for the 25-lap Spring Shootout.

Chris Jakubiak wasted no time putting his CQC Painting 49 in the lead over Tyler Rapp’s Trinity Construction Inc. 2a. That left Bennington, VT racer Joey Scarborough with his Central Vermont Motorcycles 11vt to battle with Spencertown, NY racer Dylan Madsen, Malta, NY racer Jon Miller, and Queensbury, NY racer Bryce Breault for top five positions.

St-Denis-sur-Richelieu, QC racer and Airborne champion Donovan Lussier was making moves using the high side early to improve from his 7th starting position wheeling his Remorquage Boissonneault 61L battling with Albany, NY racer Jeff Washburn and his R. Bowles Heating | Plumbing 18 car.

By the 1/3 mark of the feature event, it was clear Jakubiak had a bad fast race rod. That didn’t stop Eagle Ridge, NY racer Mike Benson with his Sausville Benson Financial 33b from waging war through the field with a hard charging Glenville, NY racer Tim Hartman Jr. driving his Kick Fly’s Quality Hemp Products 22 Cyclone.

In the mid portion of the race there were multiple 3-car battles going on including one between Lussier, Miller’s Lazzaro Auto Body 12 car, and the Advanced Auto Parts 2b of Bryce Breault. All that action wasn’t slowing defending Albany-Saratoga champion Hartman Jr. from applying pressure.

Just as Jakubiak hit lap traffic, Rapp made contact with the inside retaining wall in turn one that resulted in a flat left front and a subsequent yellow flag on lap 14.

The restart didn’t treat some drivers well, as inadvertent contact between Canaan, CT racer Chris Crane Jr. and Ballston Spa, NY racer Dan Grignon resulted in a multicar accident that left Amsterdam, NY racer Zach Buff unhappy with a heavily damaged West End Towing & Repair 01 racecar.

In the closing laps Jakubiak ran away and parked it in Scott Duell Marketing Designs victory lane, while Lussier hounded Scarborough eventually taking over the runner up position. Hartman Jr. crossed the finish line 4th, with the Madsen Overhead Doors 89 of Dylan Madsen completed the top five.

Rounding out the top ten were Canaan, CT racer Connor Crane, Jon Miller, Voorheesville, NY racer Pat Jones, Rensselaer, NY racer Cody Ochs, and Bryce Breault.

NOTES: The car count was healthy, crowd huge, and racing action packed. Canaan, VT racer Connor Crane drove his Crane’s Outdoor Power Equipment 711c impressively from 15th to 6th. Voorheesville, NY racer Pat Jones had a solid run from 18th to 8th. Finally, it’s rare a Sportsman Modified race in the Capital District doesn’t have a Tim Hartman Jr. mention. He made daring moves sometimes 3-deep to climb from 13th to 4th.

TITLE WATCH: Defending CDRA champion Taylor Wason had to dig himself out of a hole, and did so respectively winning an LCQ with his Lenihan Paving 07w and finishing 14th by races end. All eyes are on Chris Jakubiak now, who sits atop the series standings after points paying race one. However, only 6 points separate the top five drivers.

UP NEXT FOR CDRA: Focus shifts to Glen Ridge Motorsports Park for a DIRTcar Sportsman East Series event on Sunday June 1st that doubles as a CDRA points paying race dubbed Quarter Mile Mayhem.

Tim Hartman Jr and Chris Crane Jr Earn CDRA Points Paying Wins At Albany-Saratoga In Twin Dj Davies Media 26 Lap Feature Events

06/25/24: Tim Hartman Jr. (22) and Chris Crane Jr. (711) park it in Finish Line Designs Victory Lane for CDRA points paying wins. (Bill McGaffin Photos)

MALTA, NY – Albany-Saratoga Speedway knocked it out of the park during the Don Davies Memorial, which included twin 26-lap contests for the 56 Sportsman Modifieds signed in to compete. Both Dj Davies Media feature events were indeed JAM Performance CDRA points paying races, which saw Tim Hartman Jr. and Chris Crane Jr. claim huge victories at the great race place.

With a large number of Sportsman Modified racers in attendance at Albany-Saratoga for the Don Davies Memorial track management made the decision to split them into two separate features, which their lineups were set by timed hot laps. Fans were treated to not one, but two 26-lap JAM Performance CDRA points paying races for the Dj Davies Media main events.

Craig Wholey wasted no time taking advantage of his front row starting position to grab the race lead in feature number one driving his Rounds Paving 98. He would pick up both Madsen Overhead Doors lap leader bonuses for laps 8 and 18, but lap 19 is when Tim Hartman Jr. came to challenge for the top spot with his MRP Companies 22.

Wholey was able to hold off an early race challenge from the Lenihan Paving 07 of Taylor Wason, but TH2 wasn’t going to be denied. Hartman Jr. took the lead on lap 19 and never looked back picking up his 3rd win of the year at Albany-Saratoga, his 10th overall on the season, and his 1st CDRA points paying win.

Travis Witbeck drove his Burdick Property Development 405 race rod to a 4th place finish, while Peyton Talbot was impressive driving from 16th to 5th in is Belmont’s Garage 14T to round out the top five. Cody Ochs, Drew Cormie, Bryce Breault, Dominic Roselli, and Brendan Gibbons rounded out the top 10 in Dj Davies Media 26 CDRA feature number one.

“First of all great job by Craig Wholey. I went up to their shop about a month ago and he’s finished second about four times now, but his win is coming,” said Tim Hartman Jr. in victory lane.

He continued by saying, “It was an advantage to run third, because I could experiment and see what line worked. And I found the top before anyone else did. It seemed like that was the difference maker.”

FEATURE #1 NOTES: CDRA point leader Cody Ochs proved bold predictions dead wrong with a solid 6th place finish keeping his point lead. Taylor Wason earned a solid 3rd place run and cut into Ochs lead trimming the margin to just five. Brendan Gibbons is another top CDRA point earner who proved bold predictions wrong, by earning a solid top 10 and moving to 3rd in the standings.

Chris Crane Jr. and his little brother Connor Crane Jr. with their Crane’s Outdoor Power Equipment 711cars brought the field to the green flag in feature number two. Chris, like Wholey, took advantage of his up-front starting spot to take the early lead. Richard Murtaugh with his Flood Doctor Properties 33 challenged Connor quickly for the runner up position.

Connor Crane Jr. was left to fend off challenges and contact from the Central Vermont Motorcycles 11VT of Joey Scarborough, which let the Madsen Overhead Doors 89 of Dylan Madsen slip on by to challenge for the runner up spot occupied by Murtaugh. All this action while Scott’s Roofing Services 29 of Max Dolliver quietly worked his way into the top five.

The only thing slowing Chris Crane Jr. down was a red flag for the High Tower Farms 74 of Matt Perry who rolled over in turn two. Crane claimed both lap 8 and 18 lap leader bonuses fending off a late race challenge by Murtaugh and Madsen to earn his first ever Sportsman Modified victory in the second Dj Davies Media CDRA feature event.

Madsen solid for a 2nd place finish, Murtaugh 3rd, Dolliver 4th, and Scarborough rounding out the top five. Mike Coffey Jr., Cody Bleau, Connor Crane Jr., Travis Green, and Jon Miller rounded out the top 10 finishers.

“This is awesome. This is my first Sportsman win ever. It wasn’t easy out front, especially at 26 laps. That extra lap doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you’re out front it’s quite a lot,” said Crane in victory lane.

He concluded with a heartfelt dedication saying, “I gotta give a shoutout to everyone back at home. I lost one of my really good friends a week ago yesterday. I gotta give a shoutout to the Simmons and Whiting families for everything they’ve been going through. This one’s for Owen.”

FEATURE #2 NOTES: Kadon Hohensheldt and Zach Buff didn’t have ideal finishes in their feature go around, but they’ve earned enough CDRA points to climb into 4th and 6th in the standings respectively. Tip of the hat to Cody Bleau who started 17th and raced his way to a 7th place finish.

UP NEXT FOR CDRA: Focus shifts back to the fastest quarter mile on dirt, Glen Ridge Motorsports Park on Sunday July 28th for the $1,000 to win Hall Of Fame Classic presented by West End Towing & Repair. It will serve as round three for the JAM Performance CDRA points paying races with Cody Ochs leading Taylor Wason by five points going in. 10 points out of the point lead is Brendan Gibbons in third, with Zach Buff and Tavien Blowers rounding out the top five in points.

“It was a great event and I have no doubt Don would’ve been proud. Great job by Lyle, Marcy, JoAnn, and everyone else involved in a unique evening for all. We’re happy to have been a small part of such a historic event for a Hall Of Fame journalist and human being for our sport,” said CDRA Competition director Rob Hazer.

CDRA is a nostalgic throwback to the CVRA days. A series designed specifically for Capital District racing. Six races make up a diverse schedule at storied dirt tracks to crown a champion. Are you brave enough to live life on the ridge, battle at the great race place, and tame the valley of speed? The drivers who do will earn hardware and some green for their efforts.
